This is my last year
as Music Director of the
Vancouver Bach Choir
and I hope that you will enjoy our busy and exciting
season. Some of our concerts are annual events:
Christmas with the Bach Choir is a warm, family seasonal
celebration when we are joined by the many young voices
of the Vancouver Bach Children's Chorus and Youth choirs.
The Sing Along Messiah, a tradition begun in 1980,
features the audience as chorus, led by the Vancouver
Bach Choir and a group of vibrant young soloists.
Finally there will be the LAST, Last Night of the Proms.
This year is also one of celebrations associated with the
Winter Olympics, and no celebration is bigger than the
performance of Mahler's massive 8th Symphony,
"The Symphony of a Thousand". The Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra is mounting this fantastic piece,
and we will be joined by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir
and the Vancouver Bach Children's Chorus, all under the
direction of Maestro Bramwell Tovey. In early January we
will also be featured with the VSO in a performance of
Beethoven's iconic 9th Symphony.
We are named after Johann Sebastian Bach and I am glad
that in my last year we will be performing my favourite
work by that great composer, the St. John Passion.
This dramatic, emotional re-telling of the Passion story
shows us the almost operatic side of Bach's genius
and is, for me, a very special piece, and I think the
best of him.
I hope you will subscribe and join us for this
thrilling season.
