Stephen Chatman’s Earth Songs
2011 October 22, 24
Earth Songs celebrates the universal spirit and beauty of our natural world. Based on settings of diverse, multilingual texts pertaining to nature and earth, the six-movement work features and an eclectic array of musical approaches, influences, and both western and Chinese instruments (dizi, erhu, zheng). Through its marriage of words and music, Earth Songs not only expresses a profound concern for the fragility of earth but also exudes a joy of nature, optimism, and hope for the future of our planet.”
Brahms’ Requiem
2011 December 3, 5
The Brahms Requiem is one of the cornerstones of the choral/orchestral repertoire. Using texts selected by Brahms himself, this intensely personal and moving work provided the first major triumph in Brahms’ career. Unlike some of the more dramatic settings of the Requiem mass, Brahms places more emphasis on the universal need for human consolation through some of the most beautiful music he ever wrote.
Last Night of the Proms
2012 May 30
Last Night of the Proms is a traditional concert celebrating the last night of the BBC Promenades series of concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall, a beloved concert series that began in 1895. The VSO, along with the VBC, proudly uphold that tradition in a fun and fantastic concert featuring Pomp & Circumstance, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and much more.
