Concerts

Leslie DalaIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the Vancouver Bach Choir’s 2011/12 concert season which has as its central theme the idea of “creation.” Obviously, this refers directly to our final offering of the season, Haydn’s great masterpiece Die Schöpfung (The Creation) but it also applies to the unprecedented amount of new works and adventurous programs that we have devised for your pleasure and sense of discovery.

Our co-production with the Vertical Orchestra features world premieres by five distinguished Vancouver composers. The concert takes place in the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library; the music will resonate through the wonderful cathedrallike acoustic of the atrium and promises to be an extremely “creative” undertaking. Also, our February concert featuring Stravinsky’s rarely performed cantata Les Noces (The Wedding) and Carl Orff’s Catulli Carmina (the sequel to his universally popular Carmina Burana) featuring an ensemble of four pianos and percussion ensemble will delight both the ear and eye with works conceived by composers at the height of their “creativity.”

Of course, we will continue the more traditional concerts which our audience has come to expect such as Christmas with the Bach Choir and the annual Sing Along Messiah. Also, we are honoured and pleased to continue our association with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra who will present us in performances of Stephen Chatman’s Earth Songs, Brahms’ German Requiem as well as the Last Night of the Proms.

We invite you to join us on our exciting musical voyage and share in the wonderful discovery of new works and the sheer pleasure of revisiting great masterworks. I hope to see you at the concerts.

Sincerely Yours, Leslie Dala, VBC Music Director
