The Damnation of Faust, Berlioz' "magnificent exploration of the Faust legend", is an extraordinary piece, operatic in scope but written for the concert stage. The story of Faust's deal with the Devil and his descent into hell will be sung in French with English surtitles. Leslie Dala conducts the Bach Choir, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and a quartet of outstanding soloists. Metropolitan Opera stars Paul Groves as Faust and John Relyea as Mephistopheles are both acclaimed exponents of their respective roles. Canadian star of opera and oratorio, mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy sings the role of Marguerite and one of Canada's leading young singers, Giles Tomkins, bassbaritone, is Brander.
